The Situation in Armenia
MASSACRES AT ORFAH
THE POSITION GROWING WORSE
EXACTION OF TAXES AND RUIN OF TRADE
LONDON, March 22.
The situation in Armenia, where a temporary lull had taken place in the persecution of the Armenian Christians, is reported to be growing worse.
Official reports of the recent massacres at Orfah state that 8,000 persons perished during the massacres.
It is feared that a rising against the Christians in Albania is also impending.
The advice which the heads of the Armenian Church at Stamboul gave to their subordinate ecclesiastical officers has not been accepted, and the patriarchs of the church are resigning their positions.
The misery which exists in Armenia is intensified by the rigour with which the Government of the Sultan insists upon the payment of the Armenian revenues.
The taxes due from the unhappy people are wrung from them to the uttermost, in spite of the complete ruin which has overtaken all the trade of the country.
