THE PORTE COMMENCES REFORMS

DROWNING MEMBERS OF THE YOUNG TURKEY PARTY

LONDON, Nov. 18.

In response to the determined action of the various European powers who have despatched their warships to the Levant to compel the Sultan to accede to their requests, the Porte has at last commenced the reforms in the administration of Armenia demanded by the powers.

It is stated that a cessation of the turbulent scenes which have lately been enacted has now been brought about.

The Kurds, however, have surrounded the town of Guerum (?) in Armenia.

Further drastic stops have been taken by the Sultan to put down the disaffection which has been rapidly increasing in Stamboul under the influence of the Young Turkey party.

Many members of this party were recently drowned in the Bosphorus by the Sultan's orders, and the same inhuman course has now been taken with others.

No fewer than 38 additional members of the Young Turkey party have been seized and drowned in sacks in the Bosphorus.

THE RESULTS OF THE RIOTING

AN ENORMOUS MORTALITY

LONDON, Nov. 18.

In dealing with the atrocities which have been committed by the Turks and Kurds, the Daily News estimates that fully 20,000 Armenians have been put to death since the Sultan nominally accepted the scheme of reform put before him by the powers.
